I began to make images using powdered graphite on
mylar as a result of the need to create a visual vocabulary
for a shift in my perception of life in
response to a profound loss. The
ability of powdered graphite to sound a
strong note that can be drawn out to a whisper on the translucent
ground of matte mylar, supports a metaphor for the transparency of
our human edges, our disappearing selves.
At a less existential level, these are also representations of my
pleasure in drawing the complex relationships of light and space,
edge and surface, the subtleties of movement and atmosphere.
